Hospitality, warmth and sharing are values extolled by Moroccan culture. Dina Lebbar showcases these qualities with a music synthesizer. Called ‘Majmaa’, (مَجْمَع) , from the Arabic verb "jamaâa" (جَمَعَ), meaning ‘coming together’, the instrument celebrates the music and crafts of her homeland.
The round shape is inspired by dining tables with food placed at the centre to encourage human interaction. The surface consists of carved patterns and brass pieces set into an ebonized oak base. Each brass touch sensor triggers the sound of a traditional instrument, such as the Oud.
This combination of craftsmanship and technology breaks down the barrier between tradition and modern, uniting symphonic and techno music in a unique concert performance.
The Instrument was programmed by Sumeet Rohilla with Touch Designer.
